4th Class – Water Safety Program

As the summer holidays approaches with an optimistic outlook for sunny summer weather, fourth class learned some invaluable lessons courtesy of Irish Water Safety (www.iws.ie) Naturally, with the impending summer holidays, the majority of children will find themselves close to Irish waterways or ocean at some point. Along with the obvious excitement and fun that can be experienced close to the water, there are many potential hazards.

In a bid to educate the children in water safety best practices, fourth class completed PAWS (Primary Aquatic Water Safety) Level 2 Land Program. As part of this certificate the children learned about the correct methods when using life buoys, the maintenance of life buoys, the identification of rip currents and they examined the various lifeguard flags along with their meanings. During the talk and program the children asked some important questions and made very observant comments based on their own personal water based experiences.
