During the first term of school, fourth class were involved in examining the Norman arrival in Ireland and their subsequent influence on the Irish way of life. The children also conducted fantastic research projects on Norman castles situated around the country. This was a great start and many of the children chose to examine Barryscourt Castle which is an excellent example especially because of its proximity to Midleton. With a bit of luck and the generous cooperation from the OPW and Robert, the castle caretaker, fourth class gained access to the grounds of Barryscourt. Robert was kind enough to share his knowledge about the history of Barryscourt, its past inhabitants, herb gardens, orchard and restoration work. We all had a fantastic trip!
