Since their election in January, METNS’s first Students’ Council have been working towards the goals that they set at their inaugural meeting. With the help of Múinteoir Réidín, Múinteoir Amy Murphy and Múinteoir Kathy the council have established a mentoring system and a yard box for Junior and Senior Yard Times and successfully ran their first fundraiser to raise funds for the yard box and for Ryan O’Reilly’s Charity Cycle.
The students’ council, which meets once a month, is made up of two pupils from each year group between 2nd and 6th.
The reps; Orlaith and Nikola (6th), Malika and Jordan (5th) , Janek and Melody (4th) , Aine and Szymon (3rd), Gaia and Thomas (2nd) not only committed to attending lunchtime meetings, but also dedicated one yard time each week to mentoring and assisting pupils during yard box activities. The yard box has helped to make our yard a happy and active place and has helped many pupils feel more included.
On May 27th, the students council organised a Crazy Hair Day and raised €368.50 for the yard box and Ryan O’Reilly’s charity cycle. They proudly presented a cheque for €184.25 to Ryan and enjoyed hearing Mr. O’Reilly speak to the senior classes about training and planning for his cycle from John O’Groats to Landsend and the importance of having dreams, setting goals, dealing with setbacks and persistence.
The remaining funds will be used to purchase yard box equipment including skipping ropes, elastics and bean bags.
Well done to all the class reps. on reaching their goals.
